PROFILELarry Jacques a member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa works for Bay Mills Community College, Brimley, MI. He recently received his B.S. in Agriculture Business Management from Michigan State University. While at MSU he worked independently on a personal project of developing risk indicators that addressed small scale Native American farming towards the goal of decreasing exposure to greater than normal external risks. Prior to his time at MSU, he had earned two A.S. degrees (both with honors) - one in Business Administration and the other in Construction Technology from Bay Mills Community College. He also received a Certificate in Public Health from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, and 46 credits of Computer Science from Lake Superior State University. After graduating from MSU he moved home from Lansing to live in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
While living in Sault Ste. Marie, Larry is currently working towards completion of his M.A. in Educational Technology from MSU through online courses. As an MSU graduate student Larry remains an active member and is the newly elected Vice President for the MSU chapter of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society. Also, acting as a contractual researcher/consultant he is currently working on two research projects through BMCC’s Research and Extension department. The first project is a grant that he wrote that focuses on the costs, benefits, and technologies of reclaiming fish waste using anaerobic and aerobic digesters. The second project is helping to improve decision support for regional planning and impact assessment of bio refineries (grass based fuel production.) Larry also maintains a hoophouse at BMCC’s west campus where he is experimenting with aeroponics, crop rotation (to reduce the need for pesticides), and is working on installing low-cost automation for more hands off vegetable production using Arduino boards (small cheap computers.) In addition, Larry has been continually attending the Ag for Tomorrow conferences, the Federally Recognized Tribal Education Program (FRTEP) meetings, volunteering at the Malcom High School hoophouse in Sault Ste. Marie, and has recently started consulting for the Sault Tribe Wequeyoc Cemetery project. He is an active member in the Sault Young Professionals, and volunteers with the group on a regular basis for a variety of charity events. During the last year his work has also included the dissemination of the American Indian Tobacco Survey for the Bay Mills Indian Community and mapping and exploring ways to expand the Bay Mills whitefish supply chain. Over the past few years he has gained experience interning for the USDA National Agricultural Statistical Service, Michigan State Extension, and with MSU’s Native American Institute that along with his education has well prepared him to work with Sustainable Agriculture in Native American communities. When he left BMCC to pursue his B.S. in Agriculture Business it was with the intentions of bringing back the educational experience to use working with the Bay Mills Indian Community, a community that had supported him greatly as a student while he was pursuing his associate degrees. |
